Legislature Considers Taking Constitution Seriously

Red-light cameras could soon be banned all together in Tennessee if some state lawmakers have their way.

The issue will be up for a vote this week before the Tennessee Legislature. The traffic camera bill would stop cities from using them.

While many drivers may be in favor of the measure, at least one middle Tennessee police department said traffic cameras in their city have cut down on crashes.

Rep. Andy Holt, R-Dresden, is sponsoring the bill.

Cities that already have the cameras installed would not be able to renew their contracts if the legislation passes.

“Part of the reason that I have such a problem with these cameras is that they are very poorly contractually agreed upon. I think that a vast majority of the revenue, it’s abundantly clear from the comptroller and the treasury’s reports, is leaving the state,” Holt said.

Another version of the legislation would also extend the yellow light at intersections now using the cameras, allowing drivers more time to get through.
