Meet a District Attorney With Common Sense

Driving drunk is one way to lose your license but falling behind on child support or unpaid traffic tickets is another.da032615

Davidson County District Attorney General Glenn Funk said that doesn’t stop some people from getting behind the wheel.

“Currently, we are seeing about 200 people a day cited for driving on a revoked license,” said Funk.

He has been recommending changes for those who did not commit a DUI and are not a risk on the road.

“First priority is let’s see if we can get something worked out where they go to a driver license reinstatement class and then have the case dismissed,” he explained.

“Second of all, if you are convicted of driving on a revoked license you lose your license for an additional year even after you get eligible to get your license just for the conviction, and so what I have instructed my assistants to do is amend the charge to ‘no drivers license’ instead of ‘driving on a revoked license’ and give the person either a fine and court costs or some appropriate sanction but by pleading to that charge it doesn’t create an additional barrier toward getting the license back in the long run,” Funk continued.

Drivers caught on the road with a revoked license are often arrested. According to the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office, it costs $95 a day per inmate and the punishment is sometimes 180 days.  (continue reading)
