Dunbar Is Open Again!

Visitors to Dunbar Cave State Park in Clarksville can once again enter the cave. It has been closed off to tourists since 2010 following an outbreak of white nose syndrome.

Officials first noticed bats were becoming infected with white nose syndrome in April of 2010 and in an effort to keep the disease from spreading the cave was immediately closed to visitors.

“We were hoping we wouldn’t get it but it’s unfortunate that we did,” explains Park Ranger Adam Neblett.

Since white nose syndrome arrived, Neblett estimates about half the cave’s bat population has been killed. White nose syndrome essentially tricks bats into thinking they need to come out of hibernation early, most often freeze or starve to death.

The state has decided to reopen the popular tourist destination even though (continue at NewsChannel5)
