Bird Flu Impact Reaches Nashville

The bird flu is starting to hit the breakfast table as the cost of eggs continues to soar.

For restaurants like Mama’s Kitchen in Gallatin, the price of eggs is causing the owners to consider ways of keeping prices low while not cutting back on menu options.

“We use 75 to 100 eggs per day,” co-owner Jim Clark said. “Eggs go into everything we cook.”

The cost of eggs for the business has more than doubled as the supply of eggs has been cut by the bird flu.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, refers to “an infection of birds with avian influenza Type A viruses.”

The CDC says the viruses occur naturally among wild aquatic birds across the world and can infect domestic poultry and other birds.

“Susceptible birds become infected when they have contact with the virus as it is shed by infected birds. They also can become infected through contact with surfaces that are contaminated with virus from infected birds,” the organization notes.

Bird flu has been reported in 21 states with 15 reporting an outbreak. (continue at WKRN)
