‘Dukes of Hazzard’ Latest Victim of Cultural Cleansing

As the Confederate flag continues to make headlines following the nine murders inside the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina, by a 21-year-old white supremacist, TV Land has now pulled ’80s sitcom “The Dukes of Hazzard” from its daytime schedule.

“The Warner Bros.-produced series that aired on CBS from 1979-85 revolves around two Southern cousins who race around their small town in a souped-up 1969 Dodge Charger, dubbed the General Lee, with the Confederate flag emblazoned on the hood,”Variety reports. “TV Land [owned by Viacom] declined to elaborate on the decision, but it is clearly a response to the broader movement to withdraw the flag from official settings and in pop culture, given its historic connection to slavery and the Civil War.”

Ben Jones, who played “Cooter” in the series, has since taken to Facebook to express his strong feelings regarding the controversial flag’s meaning.  (continue reading at NewsChannel5)
