Metro to Spend Money Hiding History from View

It’s a familiar sight to everyone who’s taken Interstate 65 North into Nashville from Williamson County. Now, the Metro Council has passed a resolution to hide a statue of Nathan Bedford Forrest with trees and shrubbery.

“We should not have a statue of a man who fought to defend slavery who became a grand wizard of the Ku Klux Klan,” said councilman at-large Jerry Maynard. “That’s not something that represents who we are as a city or who we are as a county.”

A resolution introduced by Maynard would have the Tennessee Department of Transportation plant trees to hide the statue from the interstate. The state cleared trees in the area in 1998 so that the statue on private property would be in view.

“You can do whatever you want on private property,” said Maynard. “We should not have used public property to enhance or promote something that is so divisive in our country.” (continue reading at WSMV)
