Some in Press Describe Bible Message as ‘Dark’ and ‘Scary’

We’ve learned more about that disturbing church meeting where state Rep. Mark Pody said he believes he’s on a mission from God to stamp out same-sex marriage.

The meeting at Nashville’s Woodmont Bible Church—which was organized by a group calling itself Defy Tyrants and attended by far-right evangelicals—was a pep rally/strategy session for Pody’s Tennessee Natural Marriage Defense Act.

If Christians don’t stop gay marriage, “Passionate Warrior” Cal Zastrow warned the group on one of several YouTube videos of the event, “the Sodomite Police” will appear at your door one day to take you away.

The headliner wasn’t Pody but a bizarre militant Christian from Wisconsin named Matt Trewhella. Newsweek reported in 1994 on his possible connection to potentially violent anti-abortion extremists. Trewhella denied it. Watch the above video to hear his speech, but we warn you it’s dark and a little scary.

“Listen folks, we will not win without casualties,” shouts an unidentified man introducing Trewhella to the meeting. “People get hurt in war. It’s a consequence of it. But if we don’t go to war, untold millions following us will be destroyed.”

Trewhella is something of a celebrity these days with the far right because he’s cooked up a cockamamie “legal theory” that he claims allows state lawmakers, sheriffs, county clerks like Kim Davis—anyone really, we suppose—to defy the Supreme Court’s ruling legalizing same-sex marriage or any other law that Christians decide to disregard.

“This federal judiciary is lawless and it’s a tyrant and it’ll always put the homosexual juggernaut and its agenda before your religious liberties every day of the week,” Trewhella declares. (continue reading)
