Nashville Launches Revolutionary Effort to Combat Human Trafficking

Nashville has launched a new groundbreaking specialty court specifically for victims of human trafficking.

Mayor Megan Barry, Judge Casey Moreland, District Attorney Glenn Funk, Assistant District Attorneys Tammy Meade and Deb Smith, along with representatives from End Slavery Tennessee announced the new Human Trafficking Intervention Court in Davidson County Tuesday at the Justice A.A. Birch Building.

It’s being called a first-of-its-kind initiative in Tennessee to combat trafficking and prostitution in the city.

The goal of the intervention court is to provide sex workers services such as education and long-term treatment rather than incarcerate them.

“There is a huge need for this in Nashville. Nashville is an it-city and with that comes both wonderful and pretty bad things. Because of our interstate system, we are a circuit for human trafficking,” said Assistant District Attorney Tammy Meade.
