TDOT Enters 21st Century In Partnership With Waze Traffic App

The Tennessee Department of Transportation plans to expand its SmartWay traffic monitoring system through a new data-sharing partnership with Waze, a free navigation app powered by a community of drivers all sharing information on road conditions.

Designed as a free, two-way data share of publicly available traffic information, the Connected Citizens Program promotes greater efficiency, more real time information, and safer roads for Tennessee drivers along with more than 55 other partners around the world.

TDOT’s SmartWay system has been in place since the early 2000s and is centered on the department’s traffic management centers, which function as nerve centers for consuming roadway information in real time and relaying it all out to TDOT’s HELP trucks that then respond to accidents.
