Metro Government Warming Up to Using Big Data

The city of Nashville is hiring its first ever “chief data officer” — a person described in a new job posting as an “evangelist for data.”
This new city staffer will be tasked with updating Metro’s “open data” project, in which government information is supposed to be shared among departments — and with the public.

The officer would also help city leaders to use more data analysis when making decisions. A long list of duties includes promoting privacy and tech security for the city.

Metro’s current head of information technology, Keith Durbin, says the new position will make government more efficient and responsible to citizens.

The position was also part of a Metro proposal in the nationwide “Smart City Challenge.”
