Having a Baby In the US Is More Dangerous Than Ever

Having a baby in the United States is more dangerous than you may think.

It’s hard to understand how the United States is now one of only eight countries, including Afghanistan and South Sudan, where the number of women dying as a result of pregnancy and childbirth is on the rise.

The mortality rate for American moms has more than doubled in the past 25 years.

Six-month-old Abigail Sanchez is perfectly happy and healthy. But her mom, Kara, says her arrival didn’t exactly go as planned.

“Never in a million years did I think I would have to be induced. Never in a million years did I think she was going to have to come a month early,” Sanchez said.

When Sanchez went in for a regular ultrasound, her doctors said she had low fluid.

They made the call that Abigail needed to be delivered that night.

Sanchez said, “I just wanted her to get here safely and that was my number one goal.”

Abigail spent two days in the NICU at Sister’s of Charity Hospital in Buffalo.

Although she arrived a bit tiny, thankfully she was healthy.

You just don’t know. You just kind of have to roll with the flow a little bit,” Sanchez said.
