1/3 of Tennesseans Are Obese

A new report ranking obesity by state ranks Tennessee 9th in the nation with an obesity rate of 33.8 percent.

The annual “The State of Obesity: Better Policies for a Healthier America” report was released by the Trust for America’s Health and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, reflecting 2015 data.

The highest obesity rate in Tennessee was among persons aged 45-64, with a rate of 39.4 percent. Those aged 26 to 44-years-old were just behind with a rate of 37.7 percent.

The numbers are even more somber when it comes to childhood obesity. Among 10-to-17-year-olds, Tennessee ranked 5th in the nation with an obesity rate of 20.5 percent. Data collected in the report was taken in 2011.

In 2015, Tennessee ranked second among 43 states in obesity rates among high school students with 18.6 percent.
