Gay Marriage Lands With a Thud in Nashville

Record numbers came out for the Nashville Pride Festival held just one day after the U.S. Supreme Court’s historic same-sex marriage ruling.

The event has been on the calendar for months, but the timing couldn’t have been more perfect.

The festival took over Legislative Plaza and stretched out into the streets of 3rd and Union Street up to 4th Avenue and Deadrick Street.

“We were expecting 15,000 to 18,000 people, but we’ve certainly exceeded that,” Phil Cobucci Nashville Pride PR and Marketing Chair told News 2.

Organizers had a hard time keeping up with the demand, running out of wristbands for the event and ATM’s ran out of money numerous times throughout the day.

“We are stretched thin, but it is a wonderful event,” said Cobucci.

This year’s Pride fest had additional significance after the Supreme Court ended same-sex marriage bans across the country.

“Yesterday marked history and today we are celebrating the passing of this law that is beautiful for so many people right now. You can feel the love, you can feel the honor and you can feel the respect and I’m so happy to be in Nashville celebrating,” explained Amanda Taylor.

But not everyone was celebrating. On the other side of the fence, protestors preached at the group they called sinners. (continue reading on WKRN)
