Governor’s Supreme Court Appointment Nudges Court Closer to Will of People

Gov. Bill Haslam on Thursday picked Tennessee Court of Criminal Appeals Judge Roger A. Page to fill a vacant seat on the state Supreme Court.

The pick to fill the seat vacated by the September retirement of Justice Gary Wade isn’t official until it is confirmed by the Tennessee General Assembly, a process that is still uncertain. But already leaders are heralding it as a political win.

“Tennessee will soon have its very first Republican majority on the Supreme Court in modern history,” Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey wrote on Facebook. “I am looking forward to getting back in session next week and confirming this excellent and historic choice by Governor Haslam.”
