Changes at the Airport…Finally

Amid a sudden push to replace her as chairwoman of the board that oversees Nashville International Airport, Juli Mosley says she won’t seek the chair position and will step down from the board altogether.

Mosley, who has been chairwoman of the Metro Nashville Airport Authority’s Board of Directors for three years and whose tenure on the board goes back to 2002, said she hasn’t decided on an exact departure date yet, but would leave after the board elects a new chair next month.

“I’ve been on the board for quite a while, and I think my time is up really,” Mosley told The Tennessean on Thursday, adding that she wants to make sure a proper transition is in place before she decides when to leave. Mosley’s term as chair expires next month, but her term on the board doesn’t end until April 2018.

Her move comes one week after Bill Freeman, the first appointment of Mayor Megan Barry to the airport authority’s board, seemed to surprise colleagues near the end of the board’s March 23 meeting by nominating board member Bobby Joslin to be the next chairman and thus replace Mosley.

Executive management of the airport authority, which is led by CEO and President Rob Wigington, was the subject of a scathing consultant’s report in November that found a top-heavy organization whose senior management has for years been “paternalistic, dictatorial and centralized.” The Tennessean reported the findings in January. Wigington at the time acknowledged the need to change and said he and his leadership team are committed to improving the airport.
