Maury County Joins List of Those Refusing to Do Marriages

A Columbia couple was set to get married on Monday at the Maury County Clerk’s office. The invitations had already been sent out and the couple had called several times to confirm the date.

“We were supposed to have our wedding in Tom Primm commissioner’s room on 3 o’clock, July 6,” the bride said.

But just a week before they were set to be married, Maury County canceled their wedding.

“I called almost twice a week, every week before I received that call on Monday,” she said. “Every time I called it was, ‘Yes, it’s good. We have the room reserved. Everything is great.’ And I get that call Monday and they had totally switched it around me.”

Maury County is one of several Tennessee counties that have decided to stop performing weddings after the ban on same-sex marriage was lifted.

County Clerk Joey Allen said they are just too busy.

“Once they made the Supreme Court decision to marry same-sex, it was just going to cause such an influx of work that we’re already overloaded with now,” Allen said. “And it wasn’t about same-sex marriage, it just seemed like a good time to stop all marriages.”

Even though the ceremonies have stopped, Maury County is still issuing marriage licenses. (continue reading at WSMV)
