Why the Craze to Save Just $8?

As Tennessee’s tax-free weekend nears an end, business owners and shoppers alike are sharing mixed reviews and bragging about their bargains.

Ryan Jackson, assistant principal at Nashville’s Maplewood High School, said he and his family visited Wal-Mart in Mt. Juliet to stock up on school supplies. He said it was “pretty tame, by tax-free weekend standards.” He commended the staff at the chain store who were helping shoppers tick items off their lists.

Jackson described that as the “culture shock” look of a kid watching tax-free chaos.

He said it was nice to see that the buzz around back-to-school extended outside schools themselves.

“There’s a back-to-school fervor, this fever pitch of excitement, even for kids,” he said. “That honeymoon does wane. Right now we’re still in that. You can just see people excited about their new clothes. It’s nice to see that outside the classroom.” (continue reading at Tennessean)
