Downtown Nashville Dangerous For Young People

In an effort to come up with a plan for youth violence, the Nashville Youth Violence Task Force studied violent crime by council district.

The group looked at murder, rape and aggravated assault over a five-year period from 2010 to 2015.

The most dangerous district for people under 25 was the downtown council District 19.

The district has the highest rent and tallest buildings, but also the highest poverty and crime rate for people under 25.

“It’s the district of penthouses and high rises. I have the highest rate per capita poverty of any of the 35 districts in Nashville. I have a lot to get my arms around,” said Metro Councilman Freddie O’Connell, District 19.

O’Connell is working with Mayor Megan Barry on 10,000 jobs for teens by 2017. He is also working in two failing elementary schools, as well as tackling affordable housing and working with neighborhood associations.

He said there are no quick solutions.

“That’s a 2019 timeline. That’s not a May of 2016 impact,” O’Connell said.
