Gallatin Goes Progressive As Police Buy Body Cameras for Officers

Gallatin Police Chief Don Bandy told the city council at their work session Tuesday night the police department is outfitting their officers with body cameras. He made the decision on the heels of several instances in which police action in other parts of the nation has come under fire for excessive force.

“We’ve been purchasing some cameras and modules to go with them,” he said during a discussion of the city’s budget when department heads were asked if there were going to be any anticipated extra expenses. Bandy said the patrol division of the department is currently implementing the camera system, but he said he would like to expand it to all officers. “We have 71 officers, and that is increasing (under the budget proposal)…we would like to get everybody a camera if possible and some extras just in case of things going down, such as radios or what have you.”
