Clarksville Police Double Down on Criminality of Camera Use in Public

A man arrested March 8 after a terrified woman told police he followed her through Hobby Lobby secretly recording her has been charged in a second case, four months after another woman said he also followed her through the store and may have even tried to follow her car when she fled.

Former Clarksville Police Officer Anthony Murphy, 30, was arrested Thursday and charged with assault again. He is already charged with assault and tampering with evidence after a woman called police and said he was following her and taking photos. In that case, Clarksville Police found him at the store asked to see his phone. On it they found a deleted video of the woman and Murphy’s reflection as he followed her through a mirror aisle, according to an arrest warrant.

On Tuesday, another woman said that between Nov. 1 and Dec. 31, she was in the Wilma Rudolph Boulevard Hobby Lobby when a man began following her around the store with a phone in his hand.

She told police the man was wearing a ball cap, light jacket and beige pants. Like the other shopper, she said his actions placed her “in fear of imminent bodily harm,” which is why he was charged with assault in each case.

“The victim said that the defendant followed her outside and also possibly followed her in a white car,” the new warrant states.

She said she came forward after seeing Murphy’s photo in media reports about the similar March 8 incident.
